For swimming meets, we may not be at the stage where swimmers are racing against each other via sitting on their couches at home nor are they entering a wild and weird virtual world as depicted in the 2018 Stephen Spielberg movie “Ready Player One”.  However, with LSCs around the United States trying to figure out how to conduct meets in the era of Covid-19 while balancing the health and well-being of swimmers, coaches and fans, one alternative that may become more of a “norm” than an outlier is clubs hosting virtual meets.

Ready, set, re-open.  Well, unfortunately it is not going to be that easy.  The opening of pools is going to be unique based on where you live, the recommendations made by national, state and local health officials, the facility director along with other individuals in charge of determining how and when your pool will re-open, whether your team has developed a plan for not only practices but also getting athletes in and out of the facility in a safe and efficient manner, and of course, the applicable guidelines and recommendations from USA Swimming.

“We are living in unprecedented times” said Shane Peterson the General Chair of the NDLSC.  “The impact on swimming is very evident with the outbreak of Covid-19.” This is how the North Dakota LSC Board of Directors meeting and separately, the North Dakota House of Delegates meeting opened on April 27, 2020.

One of the NDLSC Swimposium presenters (for parent breakout sessions) will be David Benzel.  He is an author, athlete, sport-family coach, and sought-after speaker for organizations nationwide. Benzel brings an athlete’s discipline, a coach’s inspiration, and a parent’s practical experience to teach parents, coaches, and athletes the necessary skills for succeeding in the athletic arena.
